Under the First Aid Regulations 1981, every employer has a duty to provide "such numbers of suitable persons as is adequate and appropriate in the circumstances for rendering first aid to his employees if they are injured or become ill at work". Whilst the regulations do not lay down how many first-aiders may be necessary in any particular circumstance it is generally accepted that a factory, building or construction site employing more than 50 people needs at least one qualified person. Employers should also take into consideration the difficulties encountered by shift workers, sex of employees and any special hazards.
